Sansevieria (General) 55cm
- Name: Sansevieria trifasciata (most common species for indoor plants). Now often classified under Dracaena trifasciata.
- Origin: West Africa, from Nigeria east to the Congo.
- Nickname: Snake Plant, Mother-in-Law's Tongue, Viper's Bowstring Hemp.
- Care:
- Light: Extremely tolerant, from low light to bright, indirect light. Direct sun can be tolerated but may cause yellowing or crisping.
- Water: Water sparingly. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Very susceptible to root rot from overwatering. Less water in winter.
- Humidity: Tolerates average to low humidity.
- Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
- Temperature: 18-35°C (65-95°F). Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Toxicity: Mildly toxic to humans if ingested, causing mouth and throat irritation, and stomach upset. Toxic to pets (cats and dogs) causing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- Spiritual Meaning: In many cultures, Sansevieria is considered a symbol of good luck, strong will, and perseverance. In Feng Shui, it's believed to protect against negative energy and absorb toxic elements (both physical and energetic). It's often placed in offices or busy areas to help purify the environment and provide strong, positive energy. Its upright growth symbolizes growth and progress.
